Science

At New Chapter we teach Science through our exciting and engaging creative curriculum themes. We strongly believe that children learn best through engagement in real-life and practical experiences, where links between learning can be made.

In Science, throughout the school, the children develop their subject knowledge of living things, materials and physical processes in the world around them. In Key Stage 1 topics studied include: 'Identifying and naming common plants and animals' and 'Classification of plants and animals'. In Key Stage 2 topics studied include: 'Fossils', 'The digestive system', 'Forces involving gears and pulleys' and 'Evolution and inheritance'. sciencestageofinvestigationEnquiry based learning is at the heart of our scientific learning. As well as studying different topics, the children are given lots of opportunities to develop their ‘working scientifically’ skills by asking questions, performing tests/investigations, classifying and grouping objects, making short and long term observations, gathering and recording data and drawing conclusions from their results.

All children take part in an end of term assessment, allowing them to explore the science topic independently.  Here is an example of the learning steps children follow when completing science investigations in class, these can also be found in your child’s planner.

To support our exciting Science curriculum, we use our extensive grounds, outdoor learning areas and garden to learn about living things and physical processes. Throughout the year, we organise visits and visitors to come into school during topics to extend our learning.  As a school we celebrate National Science Week in March.
